Silvia Baumgart
Silvia Baumgart is an intellectual property solicitor with extensive experience in the arts and design industry.
She advises artists, creative start-ups, and established businesses in the creative sector such as production companies, fashion designers, and tech developers in the fintech and computer games industries, on copyright, trade marks, licensing, brand protection, and the commercialisation of intellectual property. Her practice also encompasses designs, confidential information, and IP disputes, with a particular focus on the creative, technology, and media sectors.
Before qualifying as a solicitor, Silvia spent around 15 years working in the creative industries, including roles at major public art galleries and as a lecturer at arts and design universities. She was General Manager of the Association of Illustrators, where she campaigned for fairer contracts for visual creators, and later worked at University of the Arts London, leading a large-scale intellectual property education programme for creative businesses. She has also been commissioned by the World Intellectual Property Organization and the European Patent Office to develop and deliver IP resources and workshops.
Silvia brings this first-hand industry experience to her legal practice, combining technical IP expertise with a practical understanding of how businesses and creators develop, protect and commercialise their ideas.
She has a particular interest in IP and emerging technologies and likes to discuss and has written extensively on the question how copyright may apply to AI systems systems.
Silvia qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales in 2018. She is an allied member of the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys and a member of its Litigators Club. Before joining Level, she practised at specialist intellectual property firm James Ware Stephenson and at Saunders Law.
